In the 1980’s I spent ten years as a decorative painter creating the successful partnership Kerr & Erskine. Clients included many of London’s best interior designers, the rich and famous. Although not formally trained, this is where I learnt my craft, to understand the use of colour, paint & materials.
I have painted ever since and have built an enviable reputation for gutsy abstracted work.
Starting with simple drawing of abstracted shapes and blocks of colour, that often resemble simple everyday items. Each painting then becomes a journey, starting with an idea that rarely survives for long as I build up thick layers of impastoed paint, scraping back, reworking and repainting until eventually I feel the work is resolved.
To quote the illustrator and commentator Ralph Steadman:
‘The paint itself is also an object – it is subject to its own motivation, rules and dynamic which the artist must overcome, ignore or amplify’.
This in so many ways express so much the ‘why and what’ I paint.
An admirer of many the great 20th century masters from Cezanne onwards, it is however from the British & Cornish Schools, William Scott, Paul Feiler, Patrick Heron and Roger Hilton that have greatest influence. More recently I have fallen under the spell of painter Nicolas de Staël something which is becoming evident in my more recent work.
The current Covid pandemic has created exciting opportunities to build up a larger body of work and to develop in new directions.
